Eleven bodies hanging from an iron ceiling grill in the dead of night, yet none of them actually believed they were going to die.
The reason might surprise you.
On the morning of July 1, 2018, police entered house number 137 in Burari’s Sant Nagar, Delhi.
What they saw horrified even seasoned investigators:
ten members of the Bhatia family were hanging in a circle like the hanging roots of a banyan tree, blindfolded, gagged, their ears plugged with cotton, and their hands tied behind their backs.
In an adjacent room lay the 77-year-old matriarch, Narayani Devi, strangled on the floor.
There was no forced entry, no theft, and not a single sign of struggle.
Just two weeks earlier, the house had been filled with music and laughter for their daughter Priyanka’s engagement.
Then police discovered 11 handwritten diaries kept inside the home shrine since 2007.
The diaries revealed a dark, 11-year psychological descent led by the younger son, Lalit Bhatia.
Following the death of his father Bhopal Singh in 2007, Lalit claimed his deceased father's spirit was possessing him, giving direct instructions on business decisions, daily diets, and family rules.
Because the family's grocery business flourished and their financial fortunes rose, every single member, including educated, smartphone-using teenagers, surrendered to the delusion.
It was a classic, terrifying manifestation of shared psychotic disorder (folie à deux).
The final entries mapped out an occult ritual known as the Badh Tapasya (Banyan Tree Ritual).
Lalit had convinced his entire family that this was not suicide, but a final test of spiritual devotion.
The notes chillingly assured everyone that the moment their stools were kicked away and the nooses tightened around their necks, the earth would shake, their late father’s spirit would appear to untie them, and the ropes would magically turn into garlands of flowers.
At 1:00 AM on July 1, believing they were minutes away from witnessing a divine miracle and attaining supreme powers, they climbed the stools and stepped off.
Nobody came to rescue them.
An educated, respected family wasn't murdered by an outside intruder…
they were silently consumed by an 11-year psychological trap, stepping into nooses thinking they were about to be saved.
